Refinishing interior. How should i preserve stenciled serial numbers and plackards?

Last place to sand is where the serial number is stenciled on interior of transom, also the capacity plate is rivited on gunnell. Should i just tape off the stencill or try to replicate later? With the plates should i pop them and then re-rivet later. Thanks.
