My name is Bob, my first post.
I had a 13' sport when I was a kid, loved that boat.
I'm looking to buy a 17' or 19 ' and I have a few questions.
First, how big a problem is water intrusion on older Boston Whalers?
How can I tell if a boat is waterlogged ?
Second, what's the best way to mount things to a foam filled boat?
I would like to mount a 2" davit for a crab and shrimp pot hauler .
Thanks !
I have seen 1965 boats that are totally dry and 2009 boats that are full of water. It just depends on how the boat was cared for.
To gauge water intrusion:
Look at the water line. If the water line is above the transom drain holes that is concerning.
Check all the drain tubes and the O rings. If in poor shape - intrusion.
Walk on the floor and hatches with bare feet, feel for soft spots.
Look for weeping, stains at screw, hardware locations.
In many cases, just seal up the holes, replace the drain tubes and O rings and use the boat.
I have helped several owners through the install process for manual, electric and hydraulic pullers.
For a pot puller, you will want/need to fabricate backing plates. At least where the pole lands on the deck and where it attaches to the side of the hull.
The design element is spreading the load/shear forces across a wider area. Use sealant for every fastener into the hull.
