I just purchased a 1971 13' Boston Whaler without a motor. This style transom is different than earlier models which can be easily determined by the earlier models having a well wall that runs the entire width of the boat versus the '71 which has a bowl style well under the motor. My question is when I measure from the top of the transom where the motor mounts to the bottom it's 17". Of course the motor lengths run in 15" and 20"shaft lengths. I was told, and am planning on installing a short shaft motor. I prefer not to get into jack plates, etc... and use a long shaft unless absolutely necessary. I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who may have/had this boat and what they used. Thank you.
You could also put an engine bracket on the older 13' Whalers so you can use the 20" long shaft motor.
See our article here on transom differences for the 13' model. https://www.whalercentral.com/viewpag...age_id=155
Thank You Phil T. and Joe Kriz. In looking at the photos of the different transom types mine is the sink bowl style with the transom dropping lower where the motor mounts. I'd prefer just to run the short shaft motor being it should accommodate it. Thanks Again!
