I have a new to me 1986 Newport with dealer sold /rigged Montauk rps and center console . Wondering if anyone has any experience with removing the Newport gunnel cap? Mine has minor damage, Ultimately I would like to remove the gunnel cap, front windshield and rail and return to the simpler Montauk. What do I need to know?
Thanks
Brian

You will be reducing the value of the boat.

There will be some/alot of gelcoat repairs to do when you lift the cap.

Expect to replace the entire rubrail (receiver and insert). A bit of a bear to do but it is DIY.
www.nausetmarine.com has the OEM rubrail components.

This brings back memories. I did a conversion on a Newport many years ago, even ordered an oem console and console rails. It was a fun project. I too thought about removing the gunnel cap but decided the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze. If you run your hands under the front deck along the top of the gunnel, you should find some notches cut into the gunnels to make room for something...but I forget just what for. Glad I didn't, I really enjoyed that deck. Good luck!
