New to Whaler Central and this is my first post. Recently picked up a 1982 13' Sport with a 2020 25HP Yamaha (tiller model). The hull is in nice shape and has been painted with a light/medium shade of blue Awlgrip above the waterline. Unfortunately, the bottom was painted with Interlux MicronCF (Shell White). Good paint, but I've never liked having antifouling paint on the bottom of a small boat, especially a classic Whaler. The paint build up isn't heavy at all. I plan to remove the bottom paint, but not sure how I should proceed after that. Bouncing back and forth between regelcoating, or barrier coating and painting with a hard finish non-antifouling paint. The boat will be trailered and not left in the water for more than a day. Would like to hear people's thoughts on what they would do, and why. Thanks in advance.

If the boat is going to be trailered, grab a couple of gallons of Peel-Away and strip the paint. Once done, a medium wet sand and your done.

Soda blasting is ~ 1K at a yard. Ask around.

Re-Gelcoat -

To re-gelcoat you will need to flip the boat and prep it. It will take 15-40 hours to repalr any cracks, sand, fair etc. A yard will charge 2-3K.

Repaint - If you want to repaint, why not leave it as is?

Disclosure - My boat is trailered and I am removing the bottom paint in sections myself using Citristrip. I am wetsanding the gelcoat and leaving as is.

I've got a fair amount of experience working with glass/gelcoat, so whatever route I go, I'll be doing all the work myself. I guess I was thinking of using a stripper like Peel-Away (have read good things about it), but first I was going to pressure wash just to see what comes off. As near as I can tell, there aren't any cracks, but there may be some hairline ones that are being hidden by the paint. I don't want to leave it as is because I want a very smooth slippery bottom. I already have the boat flipped over on blocks.

Be careful with the pressure washer.

You can blow off the gelcoat if you are not careful.

Also don't want to get water into the hull.

Thanks for that. I always start at a safe distance with a wider angle tip just to see how it's going to go, and adjust as necessary.
