I have a 1999 16' dauntless with 90 hp 1999 2stroke. last time out the motor would increase revs but speed would not increase and churned up water into rear well. felt like prop was slipping although later on land when turned prop by hand seemed tro turn over engine. Do I need a new prop. don't know current size but assume original aluminum, or does the spline wear out and need new spline?? , whatever. any help would be appreciated.

Fred - If you can turn the prop by hand with the engine OFF and in gear, the hub is gone.

While it can be replaced, you should consider investing in a stainless prop. It will be more efficient and you'll get better performance. It will still protect your gear case if you hit a winter stick in the harbor.

If you have a Mercury 90, here are specific props that owners have tested and recommend. There has been extensive testing by Dauntless 16 owners.

Note most recommendations are 4 bladed props since they help get the hull out of the hole and up on plane with less bow rise and holdings plane better. Note engine height. +3 means 3 empty holes above the top bolt.

13-1/4" x 15" Stiletto Bay Pro + 3 holes
13-13/4" x 17" Trophy Plus. +3 holes
14" x 15" Stiletto Star +3 holes
13.25 x 17 Stiletto Advantage 1 +2 holes

You might check with Burr Brothers and see what props from the list they can get you. You can always buy online.

Thank you for your input. Obviously you are familiar with Marion. I maybe misstated re turning the prop, the prop didn't just spin on the hub but resisted enough so it felt like as you turned it with great effort a 1/2 a turn, you were actually turning over the engine. it didn't spin over easily. However when driving the boat in gear there was no increase in forward thrust, just a lot of prop spinning, splashing. Could only limp back to dock at very low speed, no where near getting up on plane. Does that make any sense to you?

If the engine rpm increases and the forward speed does not increase it would be either the prop or an issue with the lower unit.

It could be the engine is not in gear due to a misaligned shift shaft or the hub is spun.
