Got my 2007 Montauk 170 and need to get a decent anchor for the river and lakes ... mostly 10-15' deep. Looking at a Fortress Marian Guardian aluminum anchor ... it is a lightweight 6 pounds (replaces steel anchors of 7-10 pounds). Shank is 22" long ... anchor locker isn't very big ... anybody use an anchor with a shank that long? I am getting a heavy duty 3.5 gallon bucket to notch out for the flukes (13" wide on this anchor), and for 100' of 3/8" rode. Comments appreciated.

Also looking at a 9 lb Delta ... heavier than needed ... but tremendous rating and dimensions look good. 9" width should fit inside a dishwashing tub with rode and chain and not mess up the gel coat.

For anchor recommendations, I look to locals and what they use.

Wanted to get something to optimize the space limitation in that small anchor locker and also have a quality, safe anchor. The 9# DELTA filled the bill perfectly. A lot more holding power than I really need ... but good to have ... and it's narrow profile and the way it "stands" is perfect.

I don't use a photo hosting site or I would post a photo.

I used the Lewmar Claw style for 10 years on the New England coast.

Lining the locker with Dri-Dek squares allows less care to avoid damaging the gelcoat.

That anchor is a perfect fit for that small anchor locker ... no nasty Danforth flukes to protect from. Only 9" wide and the 100' of 3/8" rode rides snugly below the shank. Going to build a small fitted box out of 1/2" * 6" lumber ... epoxy coated and painted with short rubber gaskets on the bottom ... to store it in the locker. Plenty of room for fenders and dock lines. Used to use a Bruce anchor on a 34' sailboat ... outstanding anchors ... this has some similarities.

Phil..quick question on DRAIN PLUG use on the 2007 Montauk 170. The boat I bought has ONE and that is in the bilge sump drain. A SS T handle drain plug. That is the only one. I have seen comments from others that there should be a plug for the ANCHOR LOCKER ... no idea why ... that outlet sits WAY above the water line. Comments appreciated ... thanks in advance (I did order 2 additional SS 1" drain twist plugs just to have them on board).

Not to worry.

Most owners never insert the bow locker plug.

Thanks .... ordering a few squares of dri-deck ... makes more sense than the box I had envisioned ... once I looked at the actual lines of the locker.

I did a Dri-Dek install video on Youtube for my Outrage 17.

That was a lot of work.
