I want to replace the two original 6 gallon tanks with one approx. 18 - 20 gal fixed tank on my 2005 170 Montauk. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The Moeller tank in white is the preferred choice by owners. Then again this was back when the tanks were ~$250.

There are two versions of above deck fuel tanks. EPA compliant (2011) and legacy. The EPA compliant are thicker walled to handle the new pressurization/low perm requirements and are much more expensive.

Your boat is pre-2011 so you do not need the EPA compliant tanks. Look at the listing carefully because the tanks look VERY similar.

Note tank prices have skyrocketed so shop HARD.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, I have heard that the "white" tanks get stained and can be very hard to clean

I just purchased a white 22 gallon Moeller tank from West Marine for a 1987 Montauk.

I've had the white Moeller 18 gallon tank on my 1977 Montauk for 4 years and have not experienced any staining issues.

Thank you all for the good info ! Do you need to buy any parts to go with the tank ? such as fuel line and/or mounting components .

This is just of the top of my head:

Tank to hose fitting - brass 1/4" NPT - 3/8 barb

3/8" ID, alcohol resistant, fuel hose (Trident or Shields brand, no blue or grey). Measure distance old hose travelled and add 1'.

6 stainless hose clams

OEM branded fuel bulb

4 white squares of Dri-Dek for under the tank.

4 footman loops
8 #10 x 1" stainless screws

length of nylon webbed strapping to make two straps.
2 nylon clasps.

Tube of Boat Life Life Caulk sealant.
electrical tape to wrap clamps.
