I'm looking at purchasing a 1969 13' Sport project boat. However, I have some concerns. The boat had some repairs done on the transom and the HIN is not visible. The current owner states he has a clean title but couldn't provide HIN because of repairs. Florida Fish & Game told him he would have to apply for a new VIN. Does anyone know if there is another location on the boat with the HIN? My 1989 Montauk 17 has a second HIN mounted on the inside of the bow anchor locker. It is not visible unless you bend over and look inside the back surface since its mounted flush. I don't have any experience with this model. I am about 6 hours from the boat so I don't want to make a 12 hour trip to look myself.
Secondly, with a transom repair what should signs should I look for on this type of repair? I'm concerned as to who performed the repair and is it reliable or will my motor fall off. Sounds funny but it's a great price and the fellow has all the parts on-hand for the renovation.
Thanks for any advice, Gordon

HIN's were not required till 1972. Prior to that date, the serial number was stenciled on the inside transom wall and in some models up forward.

A serial number is listed on the title. If the seller has the title, what is the number listed on the title?. Take the original title to Florida F&G.
Explain the boat is pre-72.

If you cant satifsfy them, go with the custom HIN.

My state did not "accept" the real HIN number from my boat, so I obtained a custom HIN. In the end, who cares. Just get the registration done so you can use the boat is my philosophy.

If you cannot find the Stencil number in the bow locker or inside the transom wall, then you will probably never know what year it is.
You should be able to sand the area where the Stencil number should be on the inside of the transom wall for a 1969 year model.

Let us know what you find out.

Phil & Joe, Thank you for the information. Joe I had thought about sanding the area as you mentioned for the stencil since it's below the gel-coat. If it has not sold I'll let you know what I find out. Gordon
