how's it going everyone, I'm in the process of restoring my 1979 13' whaler, I would like to preserve the original stencil on the transom, what have you guys done to if any kept it original?
theres cracking throughout the boat it will need to be sanded etc, would it be better to cover with tape the stencil then when finishing up add clear epoxy?

When I primed and painted my hull I made two stickers to cover the stencil, one smaller which I put on first and then primed the boat, then another that was 1/4 or so larger overall which I placed on the boat after priming. The end result was a grey (epoxy primer) outline around the original stencil. See attached image.
