I am looking at purchasing a 2000 Montauk 17, I have looked at several of these and noticed the owners have installed a bulge pump in the area where all the cables and fuel line are located in the area before the transom pit. I thought these boats were self bailing? Thank you

There is a explanation of this at about the 11 minute mark of the below video review of a Montauk. Watch the video all the way to the end to see the self-bailing in real time. Leaving the transom plug in when underway or when moored will require the pump if the boat takes on water (rain or rough water).

Simply put, with the drain open, water will enter till it reaches equilibrium with the outside water level.

In most boats, this is only a gallon or so.

In some older boats with heavy stern weight, it can be on the deck.

Some owners expect the boat to be "dry" and install a bilge pump to keep the boat dry.

You should test your boat and determine if you think you need the pump.

Personally, unless the water level is on the deck, there is no need.
