I'm new to the forums and excited to join.
Forgive me if this topic has been covered but I could not find it.
I just took delivery of a 2000 Dauntless 16' with 2010 115 Evenrude e-tec,, without a trailer.
What is the best advice for setting up the trailer? Specifically, I'm interested in setting up the bunks/rollers and concerned about clearances.
I have a trailer that will work but it has been set up for a different boat in the past.
Any pictures, measurements, or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Amanda

Welcome and congratulations.
You should have 2 bunks, ~2' off both sides of the centerline.
Bunks can be 2x4 on the flat, covered in carpet or plastic.
Suggest at least 2 - 12" keel rollers at the rear cross member. To protect the keel from hitting the cross member and to allow boat easy launch retrieve.
Install rollers first, at highest height, then bunks. Adjust height of both so that the outer edge of hull does not hit fender. Weight is on the rollers, bunks just support the boat side-to-side only.
Here is a photo showing a slightly larger trailer for a Outrage 17.
Good online source for trailer hardware is www.sturdybuiltonline.com

Amanda,
Your boat profile says you have a 2010 Dauntless 160.
But you say in this post you have a 2000 Dauntless 16.
Do you have both?
Or is one a typo?

Typo, I have a 2000 Dauntless 16'. I'll correct it once I figure out how.
Thanks for pointing that out.
(EDIT: fixed it for you. Thanks for clarifying)

Thanks Phil, I didn't realize that the keel rollers were supposed to take all the weight. I thought that would have been the bunks job. So all that weight can be safely supported by a few rollers on the keel?
That makes me nervous.
I guess there wouldn't be any harm in spreading out the weight across the rollers and bunks.

All Boston Whalers hulls are designed so that the keel supports the weight.
In the beginning, keel roller trailers (with bunks) were sold by dealers. In recent years, Whaler has cut back on the trailers to just bunks to save money. They have not changed the design of the hulls.
There is an advantage to a keel/bunk trailer. The boat is easier to launch and retrieve. With shallow or very steep ramps, this is a major plus.
A bunk trailer requires enough water to float the hull off the trailer. Sometimes this requires the vehicle being at the water's edge.
I would make the bunks 2x6 for all bunk setup.
In the end, either setup will be fine for your boat.

I guess my question is, How far off the frame should the bunks be so that the keel clears the trailer?
My particular trailer does not have the dip in the beam that runs across the back of the trailer.
See attached for the trailer I plan on using.
Originally it had two large sea-doos on it.

You can do some measurements.
From the centerline of the hull, measure out 2' horizontally. Now measure up to the hull.
That is the distance, plus ~3-4", the bunk riser needs to be. They make them up to 12" tall. If you need more height you can add blocks under the bunk boards if need be.
Also measure the height of the fender off the frame. This distance is also important.

That makes sense.
I'll take some measurements this weekend.
In my excitement, I was rushing things and trying to get some of these numbers in mind before going back to the cottage to measure.
Thanks for all your input.

Old post, but hoping someone can help out. I have a 2000 Dauntless 16' and need a new trailer. My current trailer fits the boat very well (Shoreline brand painted trailer with bunks and keel rollers) but is rusting out.
I have been shopping around for an appropriate replacement, and most of the trailers that are rated for at least 2800# and not over 21' long are 74" between the fenders which seems too narrow. My current trailer is about 82" between fenders and the hull has just a couple inches clearance on each side.
I'd rather not spend the $$ on a custom built trailer if there is an adjustable stock trailer that I can get that will work well. EZ loader quote for stock 2850# aluminum is about $3800 while custom build from Tuff Trailers is $7000 ish.
Can someone with the same boat let me know what the dimensions and/or make and model are for your trailer?
Thanks,
Tim
(EDIT: corrected to proper model name of 2000 Dauntless 16', Not Dauntless 160)
