I have a 2013 150 SS with the 19 Gallon tank. I recently filled the tank up and when the weather gets hot gas is leaking from the cap and the gas gauge. I am told this is normal and can be avoided by only filling the tank to 3/4s. Is this accurate advice?

It should not be leaking from either. Especially the gas gauge. The cap should be self venting but only from the top.

Thanks. I was told that the newer tanks (2011 or newer) are not self venting. Any suggestions on how to stop the leak? Once the tanks gets to below 3/4 full it will stop leaking?

The easiest solution is to limit filling the tank to 3/4 of it's capacity.

Otherwise, visit the tank manufacturers web site for instructions on avoiding the problem. The six gallon tank fill cap on our Whaler has a fill cap with an adjustable vent valve incorporated. The valve can vent the tank when it "inflates" from warm weather temperatures. We just push it down and let the fumes escape.

Regardless of how much pressure has been in the tank it has never leaked. The temperature in our garage where we store the boat has been as high as 120F and possibly higher. I assume you have tightened the tank gage? It may have a defective gasket.

Thanks for the response. I have a similar vent cap push down to relieve the pressure. Problem is I can’t relive the pressure when I am not there. Yes the gas gauge is tightened down.

There is a "fill line" moulded into the side of the tank.

The days of "fill it till it is full" are over.

The new caps do vent and also release pressure at >3 psi.

As I said to Tambo, I replaced my new tank cap with a traditional vent cap.
