I have a 1983 Montauk 17 with a Yamaha 90hp that I am restoring and outfitting for use on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Mexico. The thought of engine failure down there has me considering a kicker motor with a fixed mount. I purchased an adjustable mount but was not happy with it's strength, so it's going back. The engine I have for the kicker is a 4.5 Johnson. Does anyone have suggestions for a good fixed mount? What length off-set should I be looking for? The boat has a swim step on starboard side so I'm planning on installing it on the port side. Anything to watch for or suggestions/photos from your install would be appreciated. Needless to say, I only want to drill holes one time!
