Hello,

Been reading this forum for years and finally created an account to ask a question.

I have a 1995 Whaler Rage that has been converted from the Jet Drive to a new (to me) Tohatsu 50hp Four Stroke. Now that I have gone through all the work of removing the old engine, adding steering, removing and adding odds and ends I take it out and it will not get on plane. From the research I have done it looks like the motor is just too low in the water. I even added a hydrofoil and got closer, but not close enough. I am thinking the best option (because everything is rigged up at this point) would be to move from a short shaft to a long shaft on my motor. Not sure if anyone has any experience with this. Here is a schematic of the motor....

My question is would I just need an extension housing and a new shaft to get this job done? Or is a much more involved process? any insight would be helpful.

I think you are contradicting yourself.

First you say:

"..looks like the motor is just too low in the water"

then you say:

"..move from a short shaft to a long shaft "

Do you have a short (15") shaft or long (20") shaft Tohatsu?

Also - What prop make, model and size are you running?

Take some photos and measurements of the height of the anti-cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of the keel. It should be 1-2" ABOVE the bottom of the keel.

If your engine is too low in the water, a jack plate is probably recommended.

Sorry about that. Phil's comment was correct. I feel like the motor is too HIGH in the water. Here are some images for reference. I have the 15" Tohatsu currently. Prop that I am using is a Solas Amita 3 Blade 11.4 X 12P Propeller 5311-114-12.

From the measurements that I have done I feel that I am 2.75" above the keel. I do have 12" of jackplate installed. Any thoughts on how low the jackplate is installed essentially lengthening the keel and needing the motor to be even lower? Attaching a photo as well. Thanks!

Another image with a little better lighting.

So other don't need to hunt the motor that I have is a Tohatsu MFS50A (50HP 4 Stroke)

For every 6" of setback one goes up an 1".

So for your setup, 2" on top of the 1-2" above the keel.

Can you place a straight board on the keel sticking out the back so you can measure UP to the bottom of the anti-cav plate.

I ran your setup (WOT of 6K, gear ratio of 2.08) through a prop calculator since I don't have any owners who tested an outboard on a Rage.

This is ballpark.

It only gives a general pitch recommendation and does not take into consideration of material, aluminum vs. stainless steel or prop blade design (chopper vs, stern liifting vs etc.)

I need to see a photo from farther away in better light that shows the bracket attached to the transom and it's location in relation to the top of the transom, start of the cap.
