A 3.5 would propel you fast enough at close to WOT, but an 8 or 9.9 would be most efficient.

Whatever you buy, you will need to change the prop to be the lowest pitch available, or sometimes called a sailboat prop.

What do most of the 15-17' boats in your neck of the river/woods carry?

Have you considered foregoing a kicker and adding a trolling plate to your Yamaha?

I trolled on Lake Michigan for years using the main motor on my 17'. The original 80 horse Merc lasted 3 years, the 90 Evinrude I replaced it with was going strong after 3 years when I moved away from the lake. I was rarely going too fast, but if I was, I would drop a 5 gallon bucket off the front to act as a drag. The way I had the boat rigged with 4 downriggers and 5 to 7 rods, there was no room for a kicker.
