repowering a 13' 1986 super sport
wondering what people recommend I put on to replace my 30 evinrude which weighs around 120 pounds....
I have been looking at 30 hp suzuki which weighs 158 pounds...
am i over thinking the weight of the motors
a 20 hp weighs around the same as the evinrude...
what do you recommend ?

Your profile says you have a 1985 Sport 13'
Can you clarify exactly what model and year you have?

Many members have purchased a 30hp rather than the 40hp due to weight for their Classic 13' model.

Your choice on the outboard brand of your preference like Chevy, Ford, Dodge, cars etc.
You can see from the chart that I linked above:
Evinrude 30hp 2 Stroke with Power Trim & Tilt = 177 pounds
Honda 30hp 4 Stroke (not sure about T&T) = 155 pounds
Mercury 30hp 4 Stroke (not sure about T&T) = 172 pounds
etc., etc.
Hopefully you will hear other members with pros or cons about motors they have tried.
What brand of motor and year do you have now?
Are the control still good? If they are, then choosing the same brand may reduce cost of the replacement motors?

Onlineoutboards is not cheap, shop around. I have the 40hp Suzuki at around 240lbs and it is heavy but obviously not too heavy as It has sat there for around 12yrs. I would lean towards a 30hp on next repower as I really never need the 40 and top speed in a 13 is a joke anyway. The 30hp anything with PTnT will be a great match. Your contraols may work with the newer E-Tecs but you would still need a wiring harness and key so not really saving much. Your old 30hp was a good fit back then but you will truly be amazed with a modern engine, noise, and efficiency these have. PTnT will add about 3-4mph on top end and you can dial it just right as to not porpoise. My old 35 was either a tilt pin too low or porpoise if raised one.

I also have a 1986 13 super sport. I am running an 2007 F40 Yamaha and it runs great. I installed an oak deck on the stern for fishing above the gas tank and battery. I also put a 35 yeti filled with my tackle gear on top of that to use as a fishing platform. In order to counterbalance some of that weight I have a trolling motor and another 35 yeti with a battery in it on top of the anchor locker. Along with me, my gear, food, drinks in another roto-molded type cooler and another person in the boat I run 31-32mph @ 6000rpm WOT. Because of the extra stern weight I added Bennett self leveling trim tabs, which are set at the lightest setting, and with the little extra drag I still run about 30mph @ 6000rpm WOT. All this with a beat up aluminum prop. Can’t wait to get a stainless prop, my next purchase. However if I were to re-power I would definitely go with 40 evinrude Etec. Watch following comparison on all three 40s Yami, Evinrude, and Mercury they also review 30 Etec in this video.

Through bolt it.
One hole up. Top bolt in the 2nd hole down from the top.
I helped an owner do an install with the same engine/boat this summer.

If you want to lose an engine, use the clamps. Do as Phil said but mount it higher. I have my Suzuki all the way up due to the slope of the 13's transom.

I have bought several motors from them over the years. They beat every local dealer, plus shipping was free. Naturally, if you have a dealer buddy local that will be willing to meet their price, that would be the way to go.
