Got it to work 10 times in a row by ensuring it was the very first power activation on the battery: Religiously turned off all switches, turned off dock power and it worked until now - and has failed last 5 times using this process. clearly a power issue but Garmin wants a minimum of $450 to diagnose with no guarantee. could go with newer cheaper model but like the 8" size....thoughts anyone?

You have to take a very methodical, baby-step, approach to troubleshooting electrical problems.
Replace the inline fuse. Test. If it passes, then:
Remove the power and ground wires from the boats power system and attach to a separate 12 volt source. This will eliminate the unit from the failure chain.
If it passes the separate 12 volt source test, the problem is in the boat wiring.
