Hey all, looking for help/advice on paying a fair price for the 1979 Newport I'm purchasing. The hull it self is in great shape, it does not have the original RPS seat, or front helm seats/cushions. It also does not have either one of the factory windscreens for the helm or bow. It's has a 1994 Yamaha 75hp that is very clean but needs a power tilt/trim motor replacement. Boat does come with a trailer that's in OK condition. The seller is asking $5,000.00, the NADA comes in at $3,800.00.

Does anyone have any input on the numbers? My main concern lies in, not only is this my first Whaler it's going to be my first boat and I really just don't want to take a beating. If anyone knows more about the Newport, or if missing all of those original components impacts the price. Any advice is great, So I can enter the negotiation with a little more knowledge on my side.

Sorry for the long winded post, thank you in advance!

With so many original features missing and a motor that needs a $5-600 repair, I think the seller is a bit optimistic.

Is the bottom have anti-fouling paint?
Is the hull shiny or dull?
Is the boat "clean" or dirty?
Are there any electronics? If so, what and how old?

Photos can help with valuation but are not the end all, b all.

When shopping for my first boat, a Montauk 17, I avoided any candidate that needed an engine or hull repair. Dirty is okay, broken or missing is not.

Hey, thanks for the response! Boat is pretty clean for mid winter I suppose. Boat has no electronics. Bottom seems solid. I have attached some photos. Thanks again!

Most members would describe the boat being in "fair" condition given the bow stop marks, rust marks on the transom hardware.

Each of these can be corrected with elbow grease and some fiberglass restoration products.

You can get a new console and forward windscreen. The forward seats are no longer available but there is a recommended alternative (bench cushion and two rod back cushions).

Looking at 2k in parts, tune-up and DIY detailing. I would not offer more than 4K.

If it was me, for my first boat, I would look at this one on the other side of the sound. While more $, the boat has original features , decent condition, late model trailer and recent 4 stroke motor for a fair price.

I bought my 1979 Newport 3 years ago with all the original hardware complete and intact, upholstery was quite tattered, 1979 Merc 80 in working condition and dual axle trailer that needed tires for $2500 Canadian

Boat needed a lot of elbow grease and TLC, all new wiring, new seats
