Since purchased I have replaced wiring harness, and numorous other parts hoever still have more restoral work ahead, now it looks like a new steering cable is needed. Will need to get correct lenght replacement, Question? Is this a Telaflex steering mechenism the only markings I can find issmall upc tag mod no 171FC. And a engraved logo looking like a 3 bladed prop, the type of single steering cable saying "Planetary Gear Design" ??What model Whaler do I own What steering cable do I need? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Swede,

Actually it appears you have a 1978 Year model instead of 1976.
See this list and notice where your numbers fit. Right after NJRuss with number 5700M78B
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=17

Your HIN number most likely is:
BWCC5701M78C
3B2944

Some of your numbers and letters are just worn off through the years.

Yes, Teleflex steering systems.
See the length of cables here but not sure what model you have.

Any idea what model you have?

In doing a search, that first # could be a T? If so T71FC is the model of the Uflex brand helm. The helm is what takes the cable and the wheel is attached to.

Typically the cables are Teleflex brand. The length is part of the model # and it is stamped on the end of the sheath of the cable.

If you remove the cable, measure with a tape and round up. I would guess the cable is 17'.

Can you post some photos?

The model you have depends on the interior. What is the console and seating like. Take a look through the model library here:

As far as I know, a 1978 Montauk would have come with a Teleflex Big-T steering system. So if your steering helm is original, a new QC (Quick Connect) cable can be installed, provided a readily available adapter fitting is added to the helm. Big -T is a heavy duty mechanical steering helm, and if it is still in good condition, I would keep it, even though it is not a "no feedback" design.

My 1975 Outrage 19 came with the Big-T, and with a new cable as indicated above, it handles the Merc 150 extremely well. Also, the original chome bezel is a beautiful touch,
