Any recommendations for a trailer for a 19 foot 1973 Outrage, brand and capacity? Tough to find a keel roller trailer with bunks, one where the keel rollers will take all of the weight. I'm in RI-

You might ask Continental if they have a distributor/dealer in your vicinity. They make some nice tilt-bed keel-roller trailers with stabilizing bunks. You don't have to use the tilt feature, you can leave it locked.

Scroll down this page to see the models I'm referring to:

Yes, I think these might be my best choice, but I'm a little unsure as to which model would be best. I would have to buy the trailer in Florida, and have it shipped, unassembled. These are the only trailers that seem to fit a Boston Whaler's needs that I have found so far, I'm sure there are others. I talked with a custom builder in Ohio, and they want $3,600, picked up there-

Walt -

As you know the key is the # of cross members and the rollers.
I highly doubt you will find a local dealer who will provide what you truly want without significant hassle and added cost.

I personally would find the closest Continental dealer and work out the deal then go get it and bring it home. You can do the transfer and setup in your yard.

If you go with the Continental, pretty sure you would want either Model CV928-72B (single axle), or Model CTV944-72B (tandem). [If you are really tight on storage space, you might go with the narrower -58B versions.]

For trailering locally, I'd stick with the single. For long-hauling, the tandem gives an extra measure of safety.

Just poking around the website, I noticed that member Finnegan has the same boat (http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...hoto_id=95) and uses a single-axle Continental trailer that can be seen here: http://smg.photobucket.com/user/lgolt...6&o=11

Thanks, I think I asked Larry what model his trailer is today. I'll post it here when I get the info-

I've owned a few stock trailers all of which came with the boat. Last year I decided to replace an old trailer that was becoming a maintenance headache.

I shopped around for a trailer and was underwhelmed by the quality and prices of the stock trailers seen. Although I'm not a spender I decided to see what kind of pricing some area custom trailer builders offered. I was surprised to learn that I could buy a custom aluminum trailer with all the useful options for little more than the cost of a stock trailer from one of the larger manufacturers.

I have been delighted with my new trailer.

Butch,

Who built your trailer?

For those who have interest in this adventure, the guy at Continental told me this morning that their tilt series of trailers were not built for the keel to take all of the boat's weight. Just the opposite, he recommended that the bunks carry the major load. For me, Continental seems to be a no go. If I'm missing something, I'm all ears-

Wow. That's puzzling. Seems to me the keel rollers on those tilt trailers wouldn't serve much purpose if the bunks are supporting the weight of the boat.

Continental does off a trailer model called a "keel roller". I wonder why he did not recommend it?

Walter,

Your contact is totally incorrect. He wants you to buy something he has in stock versus ordering from the factory.

I have read a dozen detailed threads with Larry providing the technical and practical information and why Continental is a very good choice.

I say this as someone who has read up on member experiences and having trailered for 10+ years.

I will ask Larry to join the thread.

Phil,

I'm glad to read your comment -- I'm on the road to pick up an Outrage on a Continental trailer with keel rollers and tow it 1000 miles home!

Talk to Fred at the factory:
Ph: 813-689-3096

Tell him you want a Whaler Trailer (w/ keel rollers) similar to John in VA. Fred customized my Loadmaster 2426 with 5 cross members and ten 12" Stoltz rollers (w/ stainless pins) that are mounted back to back. It also has a pair of 2x4 bunks that fit well against the chines and are mainly intended for balance.

It originally came with a device that was mounted on the most forward cross member to guide the bow towards the wench but I replaced it with another set of dual rollers so I could get a little more support.

It has 4 wheel disk brakes and Vortex hub assemblies so if you lose a bearing your spare tire has the hub attached.

The dealer I worked with was S&S Marine in Norfolk but I'd guess there is a dealer closer to RI. If not, talk to Gary who is the owner and his number is -800-453-6053.

Take a look at my personal page to see a couple pictures of the trailer. When I took that first photo I just got it home. It included the forward guide that I removed and didn't have the side guide posts mounted at that time but should give you a pretty good idea of what you'll be getting. The second photo shows it at the ramp. After I got everything adjusted it rolls on and off very easily. It almost loads and unloads by itself and compared to my former wobble roller trailer, it sits lower so I do not need to dunk my Xterra too far into the water to launch/retrieve.

Regarding Continental keel roller, tilt frame galvanized trailers, Phil is correct and the guy at Continental has NO CLUE as to what he is talking about. I guess any company can hire amatures who don't know what they are talking about. As proof just take a look at the Personal website link and see my five Whalers sitting on Continental keel roller trailers, including a fairly substantial and heavy Outrage 25 with twin engines. That trailer and boat, incidentally, since 1989 has over 100,000 highway miles on it carrying that boat on keel rollers!!

The Continental C-8 under my Outrage 19 (as pictured), the boat Blackduck is talking about here. cost $1600 in 2008, purchased in Ft Lauderdale FL, The doubled up brackets, Stoltz rollers and SS shafts were an extra $300 or so.

HI I have a 17' Eastport that I trailer on an EZ Loader trailer I changed from a roller type to bunks. If you are good with tools it's not hard to do. All the parts are available at the better marine supply houses. Let me know if you want details. Chris

Just to be clear, the person who told me that the tilt style trailer offered by Continental was not designed to have the keel rollers support all of the weight was at the Continental factory. And quite honestly, if you look closely at the pictures of those trailers, do those cross members look like they could support a 1 ton load?

Larry,

I can't find any trailers C-8-

Walter

John,

I sent Loadmaster an email-

The C-8 is a straight cross frame trailer, and has been replaced in the line by a CV-8, which has a slight cross frame "v".

The trailers are made of all welded hot rolled mill structural steel channel section. I have never seen any deflection in the frame members under load. The straight frame cross member may be stronger than the v cross member since there is no weld mid section.

The trailers all work fine for me.

I am the sales rep for Karavan trailers we build all of the galv trailers coming from Whaler for the past five years. Our plant is located right across the street in Edgewater Florida. We don't sell roller trailers to BW but I can make you one out of the same frame they currently use. (email is in profile)
