Hi all first post here as I am looking to buy a 1998 17ft Outrage w/ 1998 150 Johnson Oceanruner. Price is listed at 12500. Boat is in good condition with all new cushions VHF garmon GPS. Biggest concern is the engine. Compression test is good, and looks clean. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

My opinion is run it. If the guy is serious about selling it there shouldn't be a issue with a solid sea trial. If it's a dealer they will usually run with a deposit. If it performs good for a period of time I'd pull the trigger.

After looking at the hull id it turns out to be a 1996. Does that change your mind at all.?

Johnson/Evinrude motors of that era are pretty bullet proof.

1996 in the first year of System Check which is even better.

I know this is a tough question, but What do you think a fair price for this boat is? I am thinking around 10k mainly based on the age of the engine. Thoughts?

For some reason the 17' Outrages hold a premium. If it is your desired hull think about the offer. If this just happens to be "a boat you want" (18' Outrage just as good) any offer works.

Garris.

My boat mechanic really likes that motor

You can dream and see what shows up in your garage.

I owned a 1997.

Good luck with your dreams.

Justin,

Honestly, without a detailed description AND lots of detail pictures it is almost impossible to give you an accurate estimate. It could be in the ballpark of a decent price.

Trailer?
Bottom paint?
Hull shiny or dull?

We don't know where you are (add location in your profile) so we can't tell you that CA prices are higher than FL.

Shop on boattrader.com and yachtworld.com and look for comps across the country or provide us more detail.

If you got an Outrage 17' II for $10k, that would be a steal in my opinion.

Assuming it runs and there is no damage.

2 - Is the Port side Aft seat a live/bait well standard? or can you make it one? Thanks again!

Been awhile since my last post, but I have been busy getting the boat on the water. Happy to say I am a proud owner of a 1996 17 Outrage. Just some minor repairs but runs great...until today.

The steering locked up on me and after pulling the cable from the helm it it apparent that cable needs to be replaced as I can not move the cable at all. With the cable out the helm turns freely and the motor moves left and right with just one finger.

My question is ... do i have to pull the engine off the get the cable off the engine? I tried and tried but cant seem to get the cable out from the engine. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

When I first got my outrage it came with a 1996 evinrude 150. Great running motor that served me well until last year. I had similar issues with original steering and bought the teleflex nfb system for her. VERY easy installation,. The no feed back system worked great and was similar to that sturdy feeling my current SeaStar hydraulic system gives. Gives peace of when you let go of the wheel for a sec..... It won't steer a new course due to prop torque or wave action.

If you decide to replace the whole setup, it's not that pricey. You can find online.

Justin -

I am confused.

With the cable removed from the helm but NOT the motor allows the steering wheel to turn AND the engine will turn?

That would mean the helm is damaged.

Take a look at the FAQ on frozen steering.
http://www.whalercentral.com/faq.php?...p?cat_id=4

If the cable is frozen in the engine tilt tube there are ways to get it unstuck.
