Buffing 1984 Montauk 17

Could someone please recommend the best procedure / product to make my 1984 Whaler Montauk shine again. Inside and outside of hull needs attention. There are some pretty good stains on the deck/floor. Thank you

I just finished a 1973 16 footer. I used a variable speed buffer and two different compounds. The first step was on lower speed using a one step compound made by meguiars… the second step was to speed the buffer up and use a yellow wax.
This boat was so bad you could get the white dust on your fingers when you wiped across it. I did not wet sand the boat as others will say is a must. I have pictures I can send of the before and after if you like just shoot me a e mail.
As for the stains it depends on what they are.. start with hull cleaner or rust stain remover… A lot of us like Wink rust remover for stains. If it requires more scrubbing Bar keepers friend is good and gives a little scrubbing action.

I've done 2 boats in the last 8 years. Both were dogs when I bought them. Everyone told me you need new gelcoat. If you want to do it right and take the time, do this.
I stripped the boat down. Everything came out. Rails off seats out, everything!! I gave it a good wash and scrubbed the whole boat inside and out with a medium stiff brush using Soft Scrub. After this you can do any gelcoat repair and hole repair.
You'll want to buy 600, 1000, 1500 wet and dry sand paper. Depending on bad it is, you might get away with 600, and 1000 only. My boats were bad and this took time. After completing this get the 3M rubbing and cutting compound and buffer with variable speeds. Be careful not to burn the gelcoat, keep the buffer moving at all times. You can finish with a Megiures polishing compound. Final step is a hand wax.
If you are willing to put the time in you'll love the results. Both my 1984 15 foot SS and 1987 Montauk look incredible!

Thank you for the information. Boat is stripped out. will start the buffing soon. Is it hard to repair deep scratches and a couple of good sized nicks. Also on the floor some of the gel coat has worn off exposing the green color under the gel coat.

Goggle Spectrum Color. They have patch paste for your Whaler. You'll need Boat info for the right color.
Also get some grinding bits and grind down gelcoat to refill where the foam is showing.

Reviving this old post,
We'll be launching the boat next week and over the last few days I've been cleaning up the hull sides with commercial 3m compound I was able to get all the scum stains off (above the bottom paint).
Next step is to go over it with regular 3m cleaner wax. I was thinking after that to use a good paste wax. We keep the boat in a slip May - October. I can usually bring her to beach to scrub the sides an scum line. But I'd like to make it as resilient as possible before we launch her next week. Any suggestions?
