My 1969 16/17 footer had original sternlight brackets. They were mounted to the gunwale, not the transom. Is that the correct location? There is a sternlight wire (apparently) nearby, but it looks as though it's designed for transom light brackets.

I glassed over the wiring (can't trust it) and was planning on mounting the brackets back on the gunwale, and drilling through the new rubrail once it's mounted, at a downward angle, with maybe a sealed grommet or something.

I don't understand how the sliding bracket / knurled nut would work in practice. If it's mounted on the upper gunwale, the "step out" just below it would prevent the sternlight from being lowered by much.

I'd appreciate advice, and if anyone has pictures they can post or ones that are already uploaded... point the way!

Thanks all,
Dan

The typical stern light setup on most smaller Whalers is shown in the photo below.
Some models were mounted on the Port side and some were mounted on the starboard side.
For a 16/17 model, I would suggest the Port side for the light just in case you ever installed a kicker motor which should be mounted on the Starboard side.

You can also see the 'Junction Box' for the navigation lights which is where the wires go out to and under the rubrail and then forward to the bow light.......

thanks, Joe! My brackets were mounted where your "junction box" is, but the original wiring was just below where your light is on the transom. I noticed that your bracket with the knurled knob is above the other one. Mine was mounted the opposite way. Seems like having it the way yours is makes more sense.

Made more progress today against the layers of paint. Polished and oiled up the old Penn reels last night. I'm projecting a splash date of July one.

Recently bought stanchions from Sue at Twin Cities Marine. She informed that the stern light was installed on side of boat on gunwale. This surprised me and I had already installed my stern light on back of boat. Most accurate information probably from Sue of Twin Cities Marine. Dan D

Dan,

There must be some mistake or miscommunication with Sue.
Every Whaler since the 1962 catalog has been mounted just like mine.
Every one I have ever seen since 1973 has also been mounted just like mine....
Nauset, Eastport, Sakonnet, 13' models.... All of them...
I have never seen one mounted on the sides.... Ever....

The junction box is on the side, but NOT the stern side.

Please show us a photo of a factory install from one of the catalogs if you can find one.....
I have almost every catalog dating back to 1978.... I also have Tom W Clarks CD with every catalog that was made and the stern light is on the stern.

Dan,

I'm glad we got that straightened out.

We definitely do NOT want people to start mounting their stern light any other place except on the stern where it belongs on those 13', 16', 17' models.

Now the Outrages and newer models are a different story but we won't go into that here.....

I do have a question about out the "stern light" on a 98 Outrage 21' - as you know, it is located on the center console and blinds me at night. What do most people do?

Hi tuckerv,

It is best to start a new thread about your topic as this question has been answered and entirely different than your model.

Okay - just saw your reference to the newer Outrage here. This is my first time. Look for new thread
