I'm looking for recommendations for what type of steering to get for my 1982 13' Sport. I'll be replacing the side console to stock specs (may buy one from Specialty Marine), running a 25-30HP outboard with remote. I have the original steering wheel, but no cables- only the springs at the bow. Which Teleflex system should I buy and with which length cables? (Which length cables do I need for the remote BTW?). Not sure if the outboard I'm buying will have power tilt and/or trim. Thanks for letting me tap into your experience and knowledge! Oh- my car read that it hit 90 in Charleston, SC today- WOW! Lee
You should really measure the cable length for your particular setup - I have a modified (dual console) 13' Super Sport (1976) and I believe I used a 10' steering cable, but there's some variation possible in the length depending on how far fore/aft you place the console, and how wide the console is.. I went for the TeleFlex NFB Safe-T II, if I recall correctly (the 3.2 turn NFB system) and I'm very happy I spent the few extra bucks on the NFB, even on a small boat. Makes for much easier handling, much less fatigue on long hauls, and no woirries about the boat turning without you wanting it to.
Hey Lee, you may want to check with Seels Outboard for the Teleflex. My wife went and picked it up for me and they gave her the wrong cable length, but she told them the wrong length accidentally. It was no problem to return it and get the correct size. They are good people to deal with. I just put in the NFB 4.2 system in my 17 foot SS LTD. I have never changed out a steering cable or helm. It took me an hour at most.
Good Luck.
Thanks for your help Roger and Marty. I think I'll hit Seels here in town and chat with them.
By the way, this is the most polite forum I've ever been on... I realized I said, "bow" when I meant "stern" on my post and no on gave me a hard time! Thanks again!! Lee
