Just picked up a 1978 whaler from the original owner. Has been sitting since 1995 in the Florida sun most of the days. The hull so far seems very solid and light. The 2 main problem tons of spider craks and the motor well drain cap fell off….
Questions:
Do I sand down all the spider cracks and fair with fairing compound? I am ok with the nonskid areas as the spider cracks are not so bad there. For the sommer should I not even worry about it get some fun out of the boat? Do I need to worry about water intrusion on the cracks?
Drain, I will do a search, how do you get the old one out?
One repair on the Starboard side gel coat scraped off to the first layer of matt. Marine Tex or …..
I the hull looks great otherwise, i think it will wet sand/buff out.
Thanks for the help!!!
I just bought a '74 in the same condition. I was going to paint the interior, but after another day of filling holes. etc. I think I've flip flopped and I'm going to touch up those fills with some desert sand colored paint after buffing it out and go from there. I bought a new wood kit from Specialty Marine and the wood will cover most of the sins of the deck anyway. And, the exterior looks good. So, I'm leaning against painting.
Yea, leaning toward gel coat touch up and go.
Bigger problem tonight, trying to remove the old brass drain plugs the outside just fell to pieces, so I have nothing to grab..how do I get them out? I am sure I can dig out the smaller drain but what about the long?
