Was getting my boat ready for spring fishing when I noticed my stern drain was loose and about a 1/4" out from the stern hull. I pulled the pipe out. It seems to be in good shape, so I am planning on just putting it back in with some 5200. Question is, should I be worried about water intrusion in the hull and that is why it became loose over the winter season, or is this something common with these drain pipes?

5200 is the devil's glue. Nothing on a boat ever needs to be so permanently attached as to use 5200. There are plenty of options out there, but 4200 should be just as stout and is removable if you ever need to replace the part. That being said, I'm curious if you have a brass drain tube or a plastic one. There should be a flare or fitting on both ends to keep it from sliding out like you have described.

3/4" PVC 200 psi tube. Looks as if it was heated on both end to fit the mushroom caps. I used the old pipe today with 4200 on both ends to seal. I am a little discouraged because it looks a little damp inside the hole, therefore, not sure how long this could've been leaking. The piping looks like someone had fixed this before. Unless Whaler uses the same type of material. I think I will eventually go to a brass fitting with pipe.

What material are all your other drains made of?
Brass or PVC?

Here is a 1997 with the PVC drain on one side of the transom and looks the same at the bottom drain.

This was the main hull drain pipe, not the transom drains. That's' why I'm concerned since this is below the water line. All drains look like they are PVC piping. Going to call the Whaler Dealer here in Maryland tomorrow to see what they where using back then.

That's not what I am asking....

If one drain was PVC then all of the drains should have been PVC...

Yes, it appears that you have all PVC drains and they were using them at that time.
Most Whaler starting around 1996 started using PVC drains...
Don't quote me on the years for all models as they may have not have been in all models the same year.

If you look in the personal page I showed you above it also shows the lower drain tube which appeared to be PVC like yours.

There are 3 transom drains......
2 for the Splashwell
1 from the sump inside the boat

Also see this article we have here on WhalerCentral about PVC Drain Tubes.

I got all my new thru hulls from sue at twin cities last week, they are all pvc, I have a 1986 Montauk, on hulls that had brass thru hulls like mine you have to open the holes up to 1 5/16, on hulls that have the pvc standard they are a direct
fit. I did all 4 over the weekend. I would rather have the pvc then brass, now I have piece of mind they will last longer then the brass ones.

How do they attach the two pieces, is it threaded? Is there a gasket, or is there just 4200 or 5200?

If you look at Joes posting up top and click on that link look at the last picture, you will see what appears to be threads but they are not, the smaller piece slides over the larger and snaps over it, makes a tight fit, I also used 5200 to make a permanent seal. I had someone hold one side as I banged the smaller one in until their was a tight fit. All 4 were around $40.00 My brass ones had seen better days but the transom wood was dry as was the foam on the lower long one and the one in the front locker. This is the driest Montauk I have ever had, it sits very high in the water. Very happy with this boat! I also raised my engine up 2 holes, filled in the blind holes with thickened west systems and re-drilled the bottom holes using Joes drawing, I drilled the yellow holes which has been another topic often talked about on this site. As you can see there is still room for the washer on the bottom bolts..

Sweet that actually sounds doable for me. I had mine replaced with brass ones, but I have little confidence in the install. If mine leak, I will use this as a reference, thanks for the post!!
