Hello All
I'm in the middle of sanding a mid 60's 13ft for a repaint with epoxy primer and top coat. I'm waiting for the weather to get a little warmer before doing the glass work. Most of the glass work entails recapping the modified gunwale. I have flipped the hull to prep the bottom and thought my rigging methods might be of some interest.
As you can see from the photos in the link, the previous owner cut out the area (chine) where the hull meets the gunwale in an attempt to dry out a water logged hull. The boat was metered (sonography) to be 80% dry recently. I weighed the hull yesterday at 262lbs.

I am going to the boat show in Portland, Me this weekend and hope to pick up the primer and top coat. $$$
My question for you folks is how much product do I need to buy to paint the entire hull, inside and out. I want one solid off white color for everything. I have no need to try and match the original blue interior, nor the budget.
My guess was 2 quarts(1/2 gallon) of epoxy primer and 2 quarts of top coat. Again this is for inside and out.
Thank you
-Nick

I forgot to mention, it will be a roll and tip application for both primer and top coat.
Thank you again,

Nick,
Nice boat! I just purchased one very similar this weekend. I believe mine is a 1972 but I am still waiting on the paper work. I checked out your pictures. Already getting some good ideas. Our decks look very similar but the hulls appear to be a bit different. Must have been great to see that Whaler insignia! Well thanks for sharing and any tips along the way are appreciated.

Will do, Jason.
If you don't already own an angle grinder and d/a(orbital) sander check out www.harborfreight.com.
Good luck

I sprayed my 15 with a quart for the top and a quart for the bottom. The manufacture should have coverage area for different applications. Wish I could help more

You really should calculate the square footage and use the coverage guide lines from the OEM.
They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.

I figure the entire surface area of the hull (inside & out) to be roughly 180square ft.
Cockpit: 13'x5'=~65sq ft.
Outer Transom: 2'x5'=~10sq ft.
Port Side down to keel: 13'x4'=~52sq ft.
Starbord side down to keel: 13'x4'=~52sq ft.
Approximate total square footage: ~180sq ft.
Let me know what you think.

Went through 3 of the cheap $20 grinders and 2 belt sanders on mine. I put 2 coats of Awlgrip 545 on inside/outside completely and used 3 quarts. I rolled/tipped 4 coats of Awlgrip from waterline up and inside, not counting nonskid area and used 2 quarts of Awlgrip. I used 1 quart of Vivid bottom paint for the bottom, 2 coats. You can see pics of everything on my personal website under my screen name.
DO NOT put Awlgrip on too thick, each coat I put on I got better at it.

Hi kidcarbon, saw your pictures, looks a nice job in progress. Noticed your hull only has 2 hand grips in the transom, any way I can get you to post the hull # and year?

DP,
re: harbor freight bargains. I've already blown through one d/a already. LoL
Thank you for your telling me about your awl grip experience.
Jack,
re: stencil. I'll post a pic as soon as I flip the hull right side up.

What brand and type of paint are you planning to use, one part or two part?

save your HF receipts, you have 30 days to swap it out for a new one when they die, they were very good about that with me

I have no experience with Interlux paint. I could have helped if you were using Awlgrip. As for any two part paint, mix in reasonably small quanities. If you have paint left, its better if its in its original cans, not mixed together and useless.
