I have the 150 Super Sport with a 60hp merc all 2010. Any advice on what to use for engine support while trailing long distances.
Thanks

Jim

People debate the value of transom savers, so I'm not going to bring that back up again. If you want to use one, the best ones I have seen are made by these folks: http://veveinc.com/shop/home.php?cat=18

X2 Tedious. I'm all about the transom savers. I've literally towed my Whaler thousands of miles and never had a problem using the transom saver I have.

I say go for it.

Are those flip down supports provided by the manufacturer not sufficient when trailering? It's all I ever used because my set up doesn't seem to accomodate the transom saver bar.

I trusted the engine flip downs and I lost about an inch off the bottom skeg of my motor as a result.

If you don't use a transom saver or you cannot fashion one to work with your trailer then I will recommend a block of wood, wedged & bungied or strapped in place to prevent the motor from dropping down.

My trailer will be very hard to construct a saver for since the back cross beam is well under my boat.

My engine has manual tilt so when I use the flip down support, the motor still bounces....even when using bungie cords.

This is open for debate and I'm sure some of the "Experts" will chime in debating what I am about to say however IMO if you're able to use a transom saver...do so as it will put the shock of the engine moving onto the trailer vs. the transom.

I too have lost about an inch from the bottom of my skeg as a result of the same event happening to me.

I have nearly 12" of clearance Clarence between my skeg and disaster on my 13 and always trailer in the down position. I simply kick it up just to be sure when entering driveways or going over big speed bumps. Never had a problem.

You are fortunate Blake! I have less than zero clearance when my Montauk is on the trailer and the engine is down. I relied upon the tilt catch and when I hit a bump the engine went down on it's own at 20 MPH.

Really? I looked at your personal page and it appears to be much less than 12".... my eyes could be decieving me though.

None the less, you're lucky if it's not scrubbing the ground when trailering.

The "bent" transom savers (see the bottom of the page on the link I posted above) can reach farther under the boat to attach to a crossmember.

Revised to 9" with my truck and 10-1/2" hanging on my Volvo

Only dragged it once being a bit too confident pulling into my alley behind my house...

Nice raised console by the way...great mod. Navy guy huh??

Instead of a block of wood I use a steal pipe with a bungee running through it so after I lower the motor onto the pipe I attach the bungee to the lifting eyes on the transom so i don't loose it and hurt someone. i had a block of wood split before.

See!!!! I knew there was more to the story, lol. Sometimes this Mark 1 calibrated eyeball call spot some minor details. Lol.

I'm glad I was the motivation to get you up and moving. Lol, J/K.

Navy guy? Yep, 21 years of active duty, retired in January 2005.

Hello all,
I have a transom saver and swear by it. The model I have has a U- shape at one end. I attached a roller to the last cross bar on my trailer. I put it on upside down and the saver sits on it perfect. Not only does this take pressure off the transom it takes it off the power tilt system as well.

The manual that came with my 40 HP Mercury 4S, says to not trailer with the support latch on the motor. I used a 2X4 with power tilt and trim. Trim it up, insert the 2X4, then power down. It has not fallen out and Oklahoma roads are really rough. I would have to use a bent transomsaver. But the 2X4 works for me.

I have a 2008 150 Sport and I trailer with a My-Wedge over the ram. Do a Google search on them. It works fine.

I have a 90hp and no way to use a saver with my trailer. I noticed my outboard was shaking a lot one day, and my mechanic said I broke some pin because I didn't use the flip down lever. 150 bucks later the motor doesn't shake anymore, but he told me to always use the flip down lever. I don't like how far it tilts up and would use a saver if I could becase the gas spills into the splashwell.

What about your trailer prevents using a transom saver?

Probably no accessible trailer cross member near the transom. Mine is the same way. My Outrage's transom is about three feet past the last cross member.
