I do not like having a tackle box floating around the boat so I used the side door access on my console to hide a tackle storage bin that holds up to three plastic containers for tackle.
Good call Joe, that is a modified SSI box. Very similar to your fire extinguisher door project.
I purchased it at a greatly reduced price due to the door latch being broken. I did not want to use the plastic door anyway. I took the door off the box and trimmed off the raised edge with my Dremel tool. This left about a 1/2 inch plastic skirt around the outside. I used 4200 and 4 small screws to hold the insert in place. I secured the outside wood frame with the through bolts shown. The through bolts go through the outside wood frame, the console and through 1/2 inch x 3" plywood backing. The outside wood frame was routed but still helps hold the skirt in place and I used the plywood backing material to form a ledge to support the tackle tray inside.
Previously the console door was only used to get access to the inside of the console and the fuse panel. I moved the fuse panel under the tackle tray and closer to the main console door.
Now that I think about I wish I would have taken pictures of the process.
