As mentioned in another thread, I may be adding a GPS / fishfinder to my SuperSport 15. The boat will be on a mooring at least some of the time, and I don't like the idea of it just sitting of top of the console in a bracket - seems like it would be too easy for it to walk away. And unhooking it and putting it away each day seems like a pain in the neck.
I'd like to come up with some type of enclosure - I'd appreciate seeing some pictures or descriptions of the way others have mounted a GPS on a SuperSport, to help me plan my project. Thanks - all ideas and pictures welcome!

Is there enough room starboard of your steering wheel on the console for a flush-mounted unit?

Possibly, but I was wondering if it would be OK from a visibility perspective. If anyone has experience with such a mounting, I'd be interested to hear about it, or see pictures.

I have the Garmin 478 which is portable. It came with a hard mount which I have installed on my 22' but the GPS lives in my house when I am not on the water. I too was concerned about it walking away and this seemed to be the best option. I have also wired it to the boat so when I am out on the water I do not have to worry about the battery.
It is a discontinued model, but I would look for a GPS with features such as portable, rechargeable battery and an internal antenna to narrow your search.

Interesting - I had not thought of a portable, with it's own battery. Internal antenna is a must no matter what route I go. From a quick look, the newer Garmin portables have reasonably large screens and are even more compact than your version.
Do you have a fishfinder / depthsounder as well? I assume that means connecting a cable. I'm not absolutely sure I'd be going that route, but I do like the extra assurance of a depth reading.

You can get a RAM mount which is a suction cup mount to fit many portables, flip a lever it is locked on, unflip and it comes loose. Or you can buy a screw on base for the ram mount and mount it where you want, Unscrew a thumb screw and it comes off. I have been using a RAM mount to move my GPS (handheld) from my car to wifes car to both boats, Have a cigarette lighter plug and it is good to go. Will also work off of internal batteries.

I do not have a fishfinder/sonar as it was not practical for my purposes at the time. My main concern was the GPS with Chartplotter overlay. The ram mounts are a good solution as I hate holes. If you are going the sonar/fishfinder route, you will need to run cables to the transducer. But, you may be able to find a mount that keeps the cables in place while you remove your GPS.
I would look for the unit that meets your needs and then see what attachment options are available.

I was looking at the Humminbird combo models, a fishfinder/gps/chartplotter all in one unit. I liked the Humminbirds, due to their mounting base. Bolt the bast to the top of the console, and the unit (all self contained) snaps into the base. No wires...the unit is also waterproof and floats! They even have optional covers that snap over the base, covering the connectors the actual unit snaps into to protect them from the weather. They are available in black and white or color models from $180 to $1,000 depending on size, and screen color options.
