Have been looking around and find there are many thoughts on weight vs HP. Some say 40 mph is dangerous on an older 13. Some say go for the HP. Some say the 25/30 HP performs as well as the 40 with regard to mph.

For me, my choice of fishing holes is in the LA marsh ~8 miles of open water due south of Waveland MS. I would like to keep the 15" transom height. Any thoughts on weight - HP and SAFTY in open water where sudden storms are likely?
Thanks
Jack

the lightest outboard with the highest HP. Typically the advice has been to stay under 200# especially on the notch transom 13s.

I have a 1993 2 stroke 40hp Yamaha clamped on the back if my 1966 13 ft that has a 15" transom and have absolutely no issues with that set up. I think that if you stuck with the 2 stroke 40's, you'll be fine.

I've heard of 50s (2-stroke, of crs) on 13'ers, but that is a very fast boat & I've seen the bow lift in headwinds at 40mph+... Jus' sayin !

I have a 30 ev on my '69 13 and it is a great match. I prefer the premix 2-stroke for simplicity and lightweight. I grew up with a buddy that had a Johnson 40 on his and it was fast....after that blew up his dad came home with a chrysler 55...she screamed. could pull a single skier with three of us squirrels in the boat. veeeeery scary with the skier outside the wake!

With two aboard my 30 is plenty fast and safe...can still get on the step with six aboard. I would stay away from a 4-stroke unless a 25 is your direction.

Move the furnature forward or keep weight in the nose for a better ride.

If you decide to raise your transom by using the Kent Fab transadapter and use a 20" shaft motor, using a four stroke 40hp shouldn't be a problem.

I'm all for using the largest motor you can reasonably install on a boat.

The 40 Nissan/Tohatsu TLDI comes in at just over 200 lbs. I think it is a great engine for the boat. With the Tohatsu 13" pitch SS prop it will top out at about 41 mph, which is pretty safe if you are careful. With more prop you can get it to 45, but that is DEFINITELY not safe. Slowing down carefully keeps the water from coming over the transom. The standard pt&t is nice on that engine.
