i am in the process of stripping the bottom paint off my 98 conquest 21 and was interested opinions, for or against the application of an epoxy barrier coat followed by an ablative coating. any bad or good stories? thanks . . . .

Need more info - as in:
1) Why are you stripping the current bottom paint? Is it already barrier-coated?
2) Wow do you use the boat? Is it in the water for extended periods?
3) If you keep it in the water for extended periods, what other choice do you think you have (than to barrier coat and bottom paint)?
Yes, go with a barrier coating. This is assuming you are going to leave the boat in the water long enough to require a bottom paint. In other words, if you need bottom paint, than you should apply a barrier coating.

thanks for the replies, tedious and blackduck. to the points . . . the bottom is being stripped because the current paint is wearing. the paint on the boat presently is an ablative coating by micron. no barrier epoxy coating has ever been applied. the boat is moored in brackish water from about may thru october. some articles i read about epoxy barrier is that it cracks, difficult to apply and difficult to obtain correct mils. i just do not want to go thru that trouble without some real tesitmonials that, epoxy barrier coat is effective as claimed and if so, is there a preferred brand? well thanks . . . .
Interlux barrier coat has been around for at least 25 years, more or less. I have never heard or read of any problems with cracking or bonding failures. Boston Whaler has recommended it's use for decades.
