I found a 1986 Temptation I want to remove the deck from to make it more like an Outrage.
What problems might I encounter?
Is the transom strong enough to hold an outboard without reinforcing?
Is the forward area similar to an Outrage? The Temptation has bunks.

How is the topdeck secured to the hull ? You can be sure that if it is screwed or riveted together that they also glued it with something like 5200 or fiberglass kitty hair. You might not end up with a nice looking gunnel when you get it apart. Let us know how it is secured.
I take it that the boat is now an inboard/outboard. Are you going to put an armstrong bracket or something similar on it ? I myself would put a lot of fiberglass reinforcing on the inside and backing plates. And make sure you look at other boats with brackets to make sure you mount it at the right height.

Don't waste your time and your money and save a classic....find and outrage if that is what you want in the end. Trust me it is going to be WAY cheaper even if you have to pay more up front for an outrage. On the temptation you can get the top deck off but, to get that deck on Whaler had to significantly modify interior of the hull in some areas so, you can never make it into a true outrage.
The other problem with a project like this is resale. Once finished you have a boat you put a bunch if time and money into and NO ONE will want for anything remotely close to what you have into it....if you could sell it all. If you put that same time and money into an Outrage you are going to see a FAR better return. People want Whalers like they came from the factory and are willing to pay for them. With VERY VERY few exceptions will you ever see someone's mismatched model non factory looking whaler project ever bring the same or more in a selling price as an OEM model.

I agree with Jeff. I recommend you avoid the temptation to take on such a project.

Don't do it. You'll end up with a Frankienwhaler and you won't be happy with it. All good things come to those that wait for the right one!!

I would not want to ruin a whaler that was in good shape but what if this person wanted to use it for commercial fishing and it was cheap. scroll down my personal page and see how I made a 21' bare hull into a tournament winner. I think I had the first triple engine whaler back then.
