Hi,

Any of you Whalers ever install a new steering cable?
My steering is sticking when I turn the wheel all the way to port side.
I am hoping it is just the cable and not the helm as well.
It wouldn't be a bad thing though if I had to replace the helm.

Project on
1996 17' Dauntless 115 Evinrude no power steering
any feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks,
BP

Depending on how hard is to get to your helm, you might want to replace both. I replaced mine with a new no feedback system, and it was only a little more than just the cable alone. It is easier than you think to replace. Do a search on here to find a thread on the subject, and that will help you.

I changed the cable n my Montauk. The job is very do-able,

The outer core / sheath of my cable wore through after years of use and made steering almost impossible. The helm was fine.

My only problem was making the 'curve' / bend in the stern as the cable made the connection to the motor. I seriously wondered at one point if I'd make it, but I did.

Be sure the cable you get is the right length!

Bring the old cable w/you to make sure that you get the right one. I installed a "Davis" Cable buddy. This allow's you to lube the steering cable periodically on the boat, extending it's life. It's an easy installation for the cable buddy. Make sure that the tilt tube is lubed, and your pivot point is greased on the engine. I use the green synthetic grease from the auto store (Marine Rated), it's stickier.

I think that if you're going to replace the cable, that you need to replace the helm too. I just replaced the steering cable on my other boat and then discovered there was a lot of play in the steering wheel...come to find out the helm was worn too.......so I replaced it. Now she steers beautifully. Typically if the cable is worn out, so is the helm.
