I am restoring a 1974 13' Sport and want to replace the external cable/pulley steering with something like teleflex type. Any comments on which works best in the little steering console?

EDIT:
I moved this from the "Comment" section to the forum section where it belongs.

I just put in the 3 turn Teleflex NFB (not the 4.2 turn) and could not be happier. install was easy, it has just the right feel - stiff enough with little play, but easy to turn, and I'm really glad I opted for NFB as it's a joy being able to run without my hands on the wheel at all times.

My console is somewhere between the size of the Sport and Super Sport consoles (though in terms of style/design it's very much like the Super Sport).

Teleflex is a good option. You will also have to replace the helm.

Thanks for the suggestions. I would like to use the original metal helm cover if possible. I have polished it up and it looks awesome. Any suggestions on how to attach it to the console and allow the teleflex wheel shaft to come through it. I removed the pulley system from it, but the threaded center shaft will be in the way. I will post a pic tonight.

dsutley,

I believe someone has done exactly what you are asking.
You would have to look in the personal page section under 13' models.
If I find it I will post it here for you.

EDIT:
I found the one I was thinking about in the personal page section under 13' models.

I like the looks. the feel and the dependability of the original cable and pulley setup. There is no motor torque fell with this setup, and it is easy to inspect for safety.

Thanks Joe and Binkie. That is excellent. I can see that this site will be a great help to me.
