I need to get my sport ready to go in the garage. I have scrubbed it bow to stern and can't get rid of the tea stain that NY adirondack water puts on it. Do I give up and and go ahead and wax over it or is there a way to remove that brown waterline? Also, do you bw lover's lay on your back under your boats to wax/clean the hull? I bought my '05 150 sport in May and it was mint and I want to keep it that way. Thanks for any info guys!

That stain is Fe3 or "Iron Oxide" or simply "Rust", small iron particles that wash or "run off" from the soil that are naturally there (and here). Some people like to use a product called "Barkeeper's Friend", I've never used it. The only time I will lay on my back under the boat is if I'm applying anti-fouling bottom paint, and I keep the boat ON the trailer while I do it (for safety). Don't try and use "Household" Bleach (15% Sodium Hypochlorate) to remove the rust stain as it is an "Oxidizer" and will only make the stain worse (Rust is "Oxidized" Iron).

Thanks Mat! It reminds me of my long haired chemistry teacher. While trying to get us to remember the periodical table of elements he used to sing (ala ozzy osbourne) "I..am..FE Man!"! That was 20 years ago and I still remember it!

Hull cleaner. Sold just about evey where from wal mart to west marine. Made by star brite and several others. It is oxalic acid and will clear the rust stain. I wipe it on with a rag or spong rather than spray it on because if it drops on my galvanized trailer it leaves discolored spots. wipe it on and by the time you get around the boat the stain will begin to disapear

Yea, I've used star brite hull cleaner too. It works like magic.
Definately the tool for the job.

Make sure you drape some sort of plastic over your trailer to protect it like Bake mentioned if you use hull cleaner.....It works great but it will play havoc on a galv trailer

The stain, is it from the water line down?

Toilet bowl cleaner seems to work. There is a gel called FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover). In my case, the toilet bowl cleaner worked better, but it's probably harsher. Then again, my stains may not be the same as yours.
