I was trying to adjust the gauge on my 1986 18' Outrage and it broke off. But the d$%* thing still seems to work!
How do these work? Magnets? Magic?
Thanks,
Graham

Which gauge are you referring to? The fuel tank gauge?

If I remember correctly works of a simple spiral spindle and float system.

Or, a lever float system

Jeff-
I dont see anything that attaches the gauge to the interior of the tank. The gauge is connected by 2 screws and easily comes off the tank.
I did more research and it does look like it works by magnets. Originally made by Rochester Gauges(?)

That is correct, the magnetic mechanism allows the needle to move inside it own sealed capsule without any direct penetration into the tank itself.
The springs hold the gauge tight to the underside the plastic deck plate to it can be read when condensation builds up on the underside of the deck plate.
Yes, Rochester Gauges is the manufacturer.

I am trying to get to the fuel gauge on my 1986 Outrage 18. How do I get the clear cover off? I tried prying it up with a large screwdriver but it looks like it is held in place by a white ring with several rivets in it. I think they are rivets, they look like screw heads without any slots that fit a screwdriver or allen wrench. I am afraid of cracking the clear cover if I try harder.
Any ideas? I will try to post a picture of it.
Thanks.
Rich

The clear cover just pops off. Use the largest screw driver you have to pry it up.

These Deck Plates are the "Pry Out" style.

Thanks for the info Joe. I have the thin ring style. When I pry up on the cover, the ring wants to move up but the cover does not come free. I will try with a larger screwdriver. This is my first whaler. I bought it used a few months ago.
