Just curious what kind of speed you guys get on your classic 13's, and what you feel comfortable running at?

I just repowered my 1976 13' after the restoration, with a 1978 55hp Evinrude - found a great deal on this old boy... I've spent the last 2 weeks tweaking the setup gradually, as I have one or two chances a week to get it on the water at the moment. At first the performance was a dog - 10mph at WOT! - so I tried a few changes, since I knew it wasn't the motor...

I dropped down to the next tilt pin hole; I moved a lot of weight forward (12 gallon tank under front seat, batter on port side under port console); I installed the old Wale Tale which I had from my old 30. Wow... coming off my trailer, I flipped her in forward and gave her some gas and bang! Jumped up on plane in about a boat's length, buzzing the rampside dock hard enough to get some dirty looks before I could calm her down!

Anyway, I clocked her at 32mph WOT on pretty smooth water and no wind in our local water ski area.. she was stable at that speed, I felt like I could handle 36-40mph no problem. Turned on a dime without feeling like she was slipping at all. I figure with a better prop and maybe raising the motor up one bolt) I could probably get a few more MPH out at least. Not that I'll be running at 40mph regularly.

So with your old 13's, what kinda speed do you get, and what's your comfort zone?

My 2001 boat with a Mercury 40 HP two stroker does about 30 loaded and on plane (measured with GPS).

I guess I'm not doing too bad with my old 55 Smile

Maybe I shouldn't push it... I just figure I've still got a crappy prop of unknown proportions and other things I can tweak - no power tilt either, so I'm sure I could do better all around with a more dynamic tilt.

I have a 1974 13 Sport with a 1994 Evinrude 40 hp, it runs a steady 32 mph on the GPS.

I just crack 30 (measured with GPS) on my '69 with a brand new E-TEC 30. I suspect I could get a bit more out of it if I optimized the prop but I don't have a tach to check where I'm running at WOT. Im in the process of adding one--so a new project coming!

Wow, I'm surprised with some of the speeds with 40 hp. After I redid mine and repowered with a Nissan TLDI 40 I put a 15" pitch Nissan prop on it. After breakin and a bit of use I lit her up. Trimmed out at top rpm I hit 45.1 mph on the gps. I don't recommend that to anyone! It was really scary and very unsafe. I repropped to a 13" and wot is now right at 40, very steerable, and doesn't feel unsafe at all.

Janis and I have blown the doors off many much larger boats whose owners just look at us with their jaws dropped, LOL. Her little 13 easily hits 40+ mph with the two of us... I will say that the speed is pushing it, but not as much as a 17' MTK with a 150 on the back. Yes, a 150... Now that was scary!

My `61 13 footer will do 29-30 gps with a 25 Merc/Tohastsu four stroke with a 9 inch prop at 6200rpms The motor is on a 6" setback bracket and set in a position that the cav plate is just above the water surface when on plane. Boat will also jump up on plane. With an 11" prop it will do 28mph at 5500rpm. Not a good setup with the 11" prop. Also slow to plane, but was better after I vented the prop. I just keep it as a spare.

This makes me even more convinced I need to raise my motor up another notch or two - it's sitting down on the transom - and most likely a new prop (the prop on the motor is pretty funky anyway, so I planned to replace it).

187lb, or thereabouts, according to NADA.

My 1979 13 sport is dry and I get 40 mph with a yamaha 2 stroke 40. It will go faster trimmed up but not very stable at all at faster speeds. Very fine line between in control and out-of-control when trimming the engine up!!!

A buddy of mine had a 1974 13' with a 2004 two smoke yamaha on it. Trimmed up, that thing was scary fast. I clocked it on the GPS at 42mph which is "hauling the mail" in a 13'.

Have fun and be safe.

With a 1980's vintage 35hp Johnson or Evinrude about 28 mph at wot. One person 6 gallons of gas. The unpleasant thing about WOT is the noise, the engines are loud at that RPM. 22 mph is a pleasant speed. Feels faster as you are sitting 6 inches above the water.

1968 13' sport with 1976 50 mercury lightly loaded went 40 mph on speedometer, felt like 50 mph, wore that one out and replaced it with 80's 35 evinrude that went about 34-35 mph. Sold that motor and put a 80's vintage 30 johnson which went about 31-32 mph. sold that motor and bought a 25 hp tohatsu 2 smoke that did 24 knots gps (27 mph ? ). My 1971 standard 13' with a waxed bottom and 25 yamaha 2 smoke hits around 25 knots gps ( 28-29 mph ) and is scary fast steering it with the tiller. The 13' standard will hit 12 knots with my 8hp tohatsu 2 smoke.

I'm thinking of raising the motor one or two holes - right now it's sitting on the transom nearly flush - and mounting a prop. with longer pitch. The 55 is solid and in great shape, I just need to tweak the setup a bit still.
