I may have to pull the wiring from the bow light to the splice with the stern light in the port side stern of my 1985 Super Sport 15. I don't think it should be difficult, but I have two questions: what gauge wire and any tips on pulling the new wire thru the hull?

I would be screwed if I lost the wire somewhere along the way. I thought maybe attaching speaker wire and pull that through first and then the new wire or using some sort of string. Any help would be great. I love this site; there is so much knowledge and experience.

well i did not get a reply on the project, so i went blindly ahead. i could not pull a new wire thru, got to thinking with the sandwiched foam construction i assume the wire is buried in the foam. after close inspection i found the wire had pretty much rotted away at the two ends. the stern wire was only about a inch out of the hull and was difficult to splic but i cleaned it up and soldered a new wire onto it. same for the bow. if this does not hold, i am not sure what can be done the next tiem.

Monti,

The wire to the bow light does not run through the hull. It runs under the rub rail insert. It is very easy to replace; you just peel the rub rail insert out and lay in the new wire.

I recommend ANCOR's 16 Ga. Marine Grade Duplex Speaker Wire as a replacement. It is much larger gauge than the original lamp cord and fully tinned so it will not "rot" again. It is also small enough to fit inside the rub rail insert.

Sometimes you may have to wait more than day to get informative replies to questions.

Fortunately your problem has a simple solution. I figured it out the hard way many years ago. I too had first thought the wiring ran through the hull without any sort of conduit and though what a dumb idea. Fortunately BW was more clever.

sorry if i sounded a bit put-out by the late replies, i was just trying to avoid a disaster. i did read on another forum thread about the rub rail, i guess i did not pull enough off to be able to see the wire. when you say rub rail do you mean the black outside part or the white part screwed into the hull? this is a great web site i do love the help.

Just pull the softer black insert from the harder white rub rail base. The wiring should run in the hollow space between them.
