What`s the skimnny on using a jack plate on a 1966 ,13 ft.to enable the use of a long shaft motor ?I am in the process of building up the transom and having a fabricator build a slide over plate ala.Kentfab but was wondering if the jackplate was a better way to go.I see a manual "PowerLift"at Cabelas that gives a 5" lift for $250.Any ideas out there ?

The Kent Fab adapter will completely fill in the area and prevent back splash into the boat when coming off a plane to quickly. A regular jack plate will not prevent backsplash unless you rig up some sort of shield to prevent that from happening.
Your best bet to prevent back splash and water entry into the boat (especially if going with a heavier motor) is to build up your transom using fiberglass or using the Kent Fab adapter plate.
The kent fab is the route I would personally take.

Cliff,I have already started my project. Made a curved laminated filler plate from marine plywood and picked up the formed aluminum transom plates from the fabricator yesterday.I am doing some fine tuning before having the top plate welded to the fore and aft transom plates.I made a heavy card board mock up,a blue print and have taken a number of photos of the different steps.At some point I would like to post them if anyone is interested and I can figure out how to do it.I figure the whole deal will come in about $100.By the way I have two daughters living in McKinney,nice place.

Patrick, wow...you're making good progress. I guess I was a little confused as to why you'd need a jack plate if you're fabricating and raising your transom anyway. If your transom build up is done correctly, it should hold your motor and you wouldn't need a jack plate.
I too love McKinney. Been here for about six years and we take the Whaler out to lake Lavon every weekend. I've only seen two other Whalers on Lavon in the last few years and would certainly welcome more.

The problem is, depending on the motor the built-up transom might not allow you to raise the motor enough. For example, my 2010 E-TEC 30 without TnT has screw clamps for securing the top of the motor bracket. This means I can only get the motor so high on the transom and had to get a jack plate along with the Kentfab adapter.
