I'm fixing up a 78' Montauk. I'm new at all of this. I have several questions:
Which Engine?, used is the only option $$ -
2 stroke up to 100HP, type? OR
4 stroke up to 100HP, type?
I've been advised that engines over 350lbs i.e. bigger 4 strokes make the boat ride awful at slow speeds?
I've been advised that there is not a huge difference in fuel economy 4 v. 2 stroke engines when they run @3800-4200rpm?
I need to replace the Coast Guard labels, does anyone know where I can get them?
My mechanic mushroomed the threads on the steering wheel when he pulled it off. I can not get the bolt back over it. Ideas?
By the way I sprayed the inside with LineX (bed liner). Looks pretty good. Hope it lasts...
"Which Engine?"
That depends on your budget and how you want to use the boat. But Budget is the biggest item.
You can run anything from 40 hp minimum to 100 hp maximum if you follow the Boston Whaler specs.
I have heard it stated that 400 lbs should be maximum weight on the transom. But I personally feel the lighter the better. Currently I have a 1994 Mercury 75 HP 2-stroke that weighs 300 lbs. I am considering a 4-stroke in the 60 to 70 HP range and planning to stay below 265 lbs. My research indicates that with the type of boating I do I can increase my range by about 40 miles on a 20 gallon fuel tank (gain 2 mpg).

Sponsor on this site Magic Brush makes reasonable replacement decals.

Use a die to re-tap the threads. Take the nut to the hardware store to determine the correct die to purchase. If you cannot repair it the standard helm to buy is manufactured by Teleflex.
