Thinking of buying a small kicker/bring backer for my 85 Montauk. Do you guys think a 4hp would be big enough? I was thinking between 5 and 10 but I saw a 4 that looks interesting.

It won't plane but it will troll fine, and get you home if necessary.

Many people think 8hp is just right.

Mine weighs in a 58 pounds....

I have had this same Evinrude 8hp kicker on several different boats now.
1997 Outrage 17' II
1978 Montauk
1985 Outrage 18'

The lighter the weight the better but I don't think I would want anything less than 6hp.... 8hp being my first choice, and then a 9.9hp if it was light enough.

Also see this article on Current Kicker motors and weight:

Big enough but don't expect win a race..:-) I have a 4.5 Johnson twin that I have used on a 17. I works even in light wind, bit I used in inland waters not tidal.
