Are you using epoxy or poly resin? The poly resin is the most common resin available at Home Depot and other places. Poly will melt the foam a bit. The foam should not shrink with epoxy. I like to use West System. My kids have a foam sailboat that we repair with it. And I use it on the Whaler. Looks like a neat project.

The standard foam is 2 part foam, usually the 2# although you might want to go with the 3# for the canoe.

What you need it polyurethane foam. You can buy it in sheets.
It comes in different thicknesses and weights lbs/sq-ft.
It's very light easy to shape and compatible with polyester resin.
It's the same stuff used to make surf boards.
