I found a pre-smirk for sale relatively cheap. I asked the owner the HIN. The response I got was: SC009071945 . This of course does not fit with any sequencing I have seen. Does this number mean anything to anybody? The year is unknown. Its a 16/17.

What type and model of boat?
That appears to be a State assigned number.
Maybe South Carolina?
Has no bearing for anything but the State...
What about a Stencil Number?
That should be there unless the boat has been painted inside.

That is probably a state assigned (South Carolina) HIN. Homemade boats can get HIN assigned to them by most states and the same process is used for older boats made before the Federally mandated HINs came into use.
It suggests your boat may be older than 1972.

I have no information on the model. Its a bare hull. Obviously, the number is not an HIN, and it is not likely a registration number either. I wasn't aware that any states self-assigned HINs. Is this something provided by the state that the owner must inscribe in the boat? If I had a stencil number, there would be no question here.

Then can we assume that you cannot find your Stencil number?
It should be on the inside of the transom below the engine or possibly in the bow locker.

You can assume that. I am very familiar with stencil numbers, but I just don't recognize this number. Its the only one the owner has given me.

All old Whaler hulls have a Stenciled Number. If the boat has been painted the Stenciled Number is still there, underneath.
SCZ is the Manufacturer's Identification Code (MIC) for South Carolina State Issued HINs.
SCO is the MIC for SEAWIND CATAMARAN in Honolulu, HI.
I suspect the owner is confused about what you are after.

You stated you asked the original owner for the HIN number and he told you.
You need to find the Stencil number that is on the boat.
As Tom mentions, every hull has a stencil number on it even though it might have been painted over it is still there.

Tom, I agree. I think this guy is confused. He probably doesn't know there is another number. Of course, I told him where to look for it, but oh well. I didn't know states ever gave out any numbers other the the registration... which is usually 2 letters followed by about 4 or 5 numbers.
