My hole shot on my whaler is horrible....it take almost 8 secs to get up on plane with just me onboard. Since I have an older 40hp motor so I only have manual tilt. I have tried all the settings with now real improvement. When someone is with me and I have them sit on the forward thwart seat the boat jumps right out and gets on plane. Has anyone else moved their seats forward to get a better hole shot? Should I look at different props? Once I am up on plane...she runs great.

Have you tried ...

Trim in one notch when you're by yourself. I do this when its just my 4 year old and me on the rear seat.

12 gallon gas tank under the front seat

2lb anchor with 100' of 1/4 chain rode in the anchor locker

Prefacing my remarks by saying that I don't know that much about props, it is a 48-year-old motor with a 48-year-old prop; there is probably some worth in exploring different prop options.

Many people move the interior forward 6" That motor may also be tired. A lot also has to do with the height cavitation plate to the keel and prop selection.

If it pops up with you and your buddy, I don't think there is a power problem. Even if the power is reduced due to age, it should still plane with half that power. In mine (20hp) I put as much weight forward as possible- cooler in front of console, battery+gas in front of rear seat.

Cut pieces of that material for drawer bottoms to keep stuff in place and put it under everything. It will keep it from sliding around since it will want to up front.
