I recently took our '89 15' Sport with a '92 Johnson 50 hp motor for a ride by myself and also took the GPS along. Full fuel 12 gallons, anchor, oar three life jackets, electronics and me (240 lb's) I was able to get 33 mph out of it at slack tide running 5400 rpm's. My question is is this good or bad?

I have an 1979 with a 70hp. Your 50 is about right. You can get more speed out of a 70hp. What are you looking for? What do you do with your boat? I have two props, one for skiing and one for cruising (top end). I don't want to be the first one there I just want to get there.

That speed sound's about right to me, Plenty fast to grab some "BIG AIR" over the white caps, or to get to a better fishing spot across the Bay quickly.

Your speed seems right for your set up. Unless you're wanting to scream accrossed the water or pull tubes and wake boards, the 50hp should be fine.

Thanks, My wife and I have been toying with the idea of getting another boat. When I asked her why she said ours was loud. This is obvious two stroke and motor five feet behind you. I like the boat, easy to trailor and easy to dock, not to mention good on fuel. I looked at some four strokes but for the price of something new I could sell my boat and get a bigger one. I found a used 40 hp Honda but I thought that would under power the boat. So I tested the speed which I am happy with. I have never pulled anyone behind it. We mainly use it for trips around Maine and fishing.

My wife used to complain that our old 48 spl was too loud. I solved the problem by bringing home ear plugs from work. My wife said that she was'nt going to wear ear plugs, I responded with, "THEY'RE NOT FOR YOU" !

Hi Davis - you can't sell your 15, it was too good a deal! I know what you mean, though, on the loud - my wife hates both the noise and the smell of 2-strokes. I just sold my 1989 70 and am in the process of going 4-stroke; it seems odd to be buying a motor that's costing me more than the whole rig did 2 years ago, but that's not unusual when repowering. I'm just gritting my teeth and telling myself that I'll have the motor for at least 10 years, so...

For reference, a 40 should get you about 30 MPH - it might actually be a good setup. I know when I am up in Boothbay, the times I've been able to use full throttle are few and far between. Also, when your little one gets ready to drive, being a little underpowered may be just the ticket! People do seem to love their Hondas.

Thanks Tedious, We are going today to here the four stroke. It is a Honda past the break in point and well maintained.
I think if we decide to get the 40 we will keep the 50 as a back up. We have looked at this quite a bit and my wife made a good point, We are never running much faster than 20 mph. She has a good point and I think the 40 will get the boat up on plane even with four people in it. MW, I like the ear plug comment however if I am going to drop a couple thousand on a newer motor I better stay on the good side and maybe unload the dishwasher at least once.
