I would greatly appreciate any advice you could pass along on a 1982, I/O 22’ Revenge hull. In an attempt to repair a small patch I discovered the patch wasn’t so small. The PO had patched an area of approximately 18” x 28” on the bottom of the hull. The patch starts about 12” from the transom and extends forward 28”. The repaired area extends down to about 2” from the keel. I purchased this boat strictly as a project knowing it needs work, but not structure. Sorry I don’t have pictures at this time.

Is this hull repairable, or should I cut my losses and sell the boat in parts?

Sure it can be repaired. it is as simple as grinding the glass out and repairing. If you find the foam to be wet or damaged when you get the glass off you will have a couple more decisions to make but it is defiantly repairable.

But do you have evidence that it is a BAD repair? I wouldn't go digging around unless you have some reason to believe the structural integrity is compromised.

If you decide to re-do it, make sure you have a look under the repair- is it wet? was the foam also replaced? how deep? If it was just a repair to the outer skin, then it should be pretty straighforward... but it will be hard to make it perfect, just because of the curvature and its size.

tjxtreme, Yes, the repair is bad. Wet foam and rotten wood.

you have reached my limit on repair attempts - rotten wood is a death knell for me with a boat. wet foam ... bad, but i can see (depending on the worth and amount of damage) giving it a go.

i am currently rehabbing a 13' - more work than i would do, but it was free. so ... i don;t have a problem with sanding gelcoat, regelcoating, or building an interior. however ... if i 'thought' the boat was waterlogged - i would have passed.

I am currently grinding out the bad area now, when I can get a good picture that shows the extent, I will post it.

I should have mentioned the wood that is wet is the wood the PO use to repair the area.

Thanks to all who replied.

you had me for a min. there on the wood. I was trying to figure how the transom was involved. grind it throw the wood away dig the wet foam out. replace the foam and lay the glass. I do not mean to make it sound simple but is something that can be fixed.
