I am looking at a 22 Outrage with a Whaler Drive.
It currently has 2 120's.
I would prefer to re power with a single four stroke.
250 Yamaha?
From a weight and performance issue, is there any reason to think the whaler drive will not perform well with a single?

I've seen singles on a WD. Can't comment on performance. I did test drive an Outrage 22 WD with twin Yamaha 2-stroke 150s for a few hours and it was a blast. The motors were rough, and the boat overpriced. Once I saw the price for a pair of Etec 150s, I about barfed. IF going single, I agree with the Yamaha F250 or F300 (if budget allows - same weight btw).

I have seen a 22 Whalerdrive Outrage with 250 Verado. I ran across this image of one the Offical Boston Whaler fan page on Facebook.
Here is the boat's owner. I would try and contact them trough facebook for first hand experience on a single four stroke powered 22' Whalerdrive Outrage....Or, maybe he is already a member here.

Although not a Whaler Drive, here is a member with a Yamaha 300 on their Outrage 22' Cuddy.

I think 250 HP would be ideal on that hull but anything between 225 and 300 HP would be an excellent choice.
Obviously, if you want to go as fast as possible, the more horsepower, the better and you can go as high as 450 HP.

Tom,
Wouldn't that depend on what the capacity plate says?
Most normal Whaler Drive models have this capacitiy plate which is rated for 300 HP MAX......

Joe -- It would if you were concerned about adhering to the maximum horsepower rating AND the rating was less than 450 HP. Ratings of 300, 400 and 450 HP have all been applied to the Whaler Drive equipped 22s at different times by Boston Whaler.
Some Whaler Drive equipped 22s were rated for 450 HP, so we know the hull can take it.
There is no federal law against overpowering; it is a common, and legal, practice in most states.
Personally, a Yamaha F250 would be on my short list along with the lighter and cleaner E-TEC 250.

I certainly wouldn't recommend going beyond what the capacity plate says.
Novice boaters may get themselves into trouble quick.
I would also recommend checking their state laws to be certain.

From what I have read here, on CW and THT, it's not illegal, but it is an insurance concern. God forbid you have a bad accident with injuries or worse, and they see 350hp on a boat with a 300hp max on the plate... you're up the creek without a paddle, or savings, or your home.
I suggested 300, because what I found in researching Outrage 22's with W/D, 300 was the only rating I saw. The F250 and F300 weigh the same.

Some companies insure overpowered boats, some don't. It's no mystery; all it takes is a phone call to your agent to find out.
You fellas are making an issure where there need not be one and we're getting off topic. roffers is thinking of putting 250 HP on his boat, which I consider ideal.

Would anyone know what a Whaler Drive would weigh for a 22’, and is it considered a flotation motor bracket?
FYI-Did anyone happen to catch Ship Shape TV series last weekend doing weight comparison on motors? They claimed manufactures weigh their motors differently and can be misleading. I don’t remember all the weights, but what caught my attention was the weight of the 250 Verado. That motor weighed 700lbs. The Mercury brochure doesn’t have it listed that much.

I have a 2009 250hp E-Tec on my 22 Cuddy Whaler Drive. The boat speed tops out at about 45mph with about a half tank of fuel, the pooch (120 pounds), and myself. No T-top. Spinning a 17 inch BRP Rebel prop up to about 5600 rpms. Hope this helps you decide.
