When I purchased my 82 Montauk, it came with an EZ Loader trailer (rollers vs bunks). At the time, I was told... even by the manufacturer... that this would be fine. Well... now Im having my doubts. I see a crack in the hull right over the rear set of rollers. My boat generally spends no more than a few days per year on this trailer... either in storage on bunks (so Im told) or in my lift or on the water.

Is this something I need to deal with... replace rollers with bunks or new trailer?

Just wondering...

Thanks to all in advance....

Being on the trailer for only a few days a year, I would question this being a weight distribution/stress issue. As far as I understand, although not recommended, many people use these trailers on a long term basis with no problems.

I would guess this is either a coincidence (happened not on the trailer, happens to be near the roller) or an isolated incident (eg at the boat ramp) that could be avoided.

But then again, a 1982 boat will have a few small cracks.

Let's define rollers and bunks and bunk rollers...

1. "Keel Rollers"
2. "Bunk Rollers" which is a row of rollers on the hull in place of bunks.
3. "Carpeted Bunks"... These have no rollers on the hull.

Whaler recommended for the Classic style Whalers to have "Keel Rollers" taking most of the weight and then "Carpeted Bunks" to stabilize the hull.

Roller Bunks were never recommended.

Do a search for trailers on our site and you will find lots of information about the way a proper trailer should be setup.

Mike -

I would be interested in learning about the damage.

Does the crack have sharp or rough edges? Is the depth of the crack slight or deep?

Where is the crack located and the length?

There is a chance the damage was done by incorrect loading or a grounding? A photo added to your personal page would help.

On the trailer front, many all roller trailers can be converted to a keel roller/bunk or all bunk setup. A photo would also help.

You may want to start a new thread if you have questions on the project.
